Issues fixed

Missing game executable (Steam for Linux)

Some of the game's Steam licenses (e.g. as activated with keys from Humble Bundle) come with access to an empty[2] Linux depot, so Linux desktop users with such licenses will get no files by default, and Steam will show a missing-executable error upon trying to run the game.[3]
Run the Linux build from Humble Bundle
Users with Steam licenses activated with keys from The Humble Indie Bundle 4 or The Humble Indie Bundle 6 should have a DRM-free copy of the Linux build in their Humble Bundle accounts.[1]
Run the Windows version with Proton
  1. Open the game's Properties window in Steam.
  2. Go to the Compatibility tab.
  3. Enable the "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool" option.
  4. Select a Proton version from the drop-down menu.
  5. See Fatal error (Steam Proton) for further steps.

Fatal error (Steam Proton)

The game fails to run under Proton with a "failed to compile vertex shader" error.
Run the unsupported OpenGL build[4]
  1. Open the game's Properties window in Steam.
  2. Go to the Betas tab.
  3. In the Beta Participation drop-down menu, select "wingl_unsupported - Old OpenGL builds. Unsupported!".
Install missing components[4]

Install Protontricks and run protontricks 63710 d3dcompiler_43 d3dx9_43.
